Lavon E. Miller, 80, of Zellwood, FL and formerly of Fort Wayne, passed away Friday, September 17, 2010. He was born in Mark Center, OH on May 15, 1930, to John A. and Ocie (Ebersole) Miller. At age 12, Lavon and his family moved to New Haven, IN where he graduated from New Haven High School in 1948. Lavon’s college education at Ball State University was interrupted by his five-year tour in the United States Air Force during the Korean conflict (1951-55) where he served as a B-29 pilot. He was proud to have trained and served with the KB 29’,s the first mid-air refueling unit. Lavon’s assignment was refueling fighter jets in the Korean Conflict. During this time he married Ardis Rose Ramsey on September 20, 1952. Upon graduation from Ball State, Lavon became a teacher with Fort Wayne Community Schools. He continued his education, earning Masters and Doctorate degrees from Ball State, and continued his work with Fort Wayne Community Schools for 27 years as a teacher, principal, and central office administrator. The last 11 years before his retirement, Lavon served as Vice-president of Parkview Hospital. In 2004, Lavon and his wife moved to Zellwood, FL to enjoy the warm weather and year-round golfing. During his lifetime, Lavon’s service to his community included: Rotary Club, YMCA Board, McMillen Health Center Building Committee, 3-Rivers Ambulance Authority Board, and Performing Arts Center House Committee. As a member of Crescent Avenue United Methodist Church, Lavon served as a Sunday school teacher and on the Finance Committee, Pastor-Parish Committee, Church Builders District Organization, District Superintendent’s Council, and on the church Board of Trustees. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Ardis; daughters Linda Jo (Phil) Davis of Lake Zurich, IL and Janet Sue (Matt) Bryant of Plainfield, IN and son Steven Michael (Anne) of Cary, NC. Also surviving are sisters Mary (Ken) Musselman of Cecil, OH and Ruth (Jack) Hart of Fort Wayne, eight grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and sisters-in-law Betty Ramsey and Pat Ramsey of Fort Wayne. Service is 10:30am Saturday at Crescent Avenue United Methodist Church, 1232 Crescent Avenue with calling one hour prior, Rev. James Evans officiating. Calling from 2 to 4pm and 6 to 8pm Friday at D.O. McComb and Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Avenue.
